Ash Mayfair was born in Vietnam and educated in the UK and the US. She received a BA from Oxford University for English Literature. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London for theatre directing and received an MFA in film-making at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
The screenplay for her first feature, The Third Wife, was a recipient of the Spike Lee Film Production Fund in 2014. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the NETPAC Jury Award. The Third Wife has since garnered multiple awards including the Otra Mirada Award at San Sebastian IFF, a Special Mention for Best Feature Film at the Milano IFF, a Gold Hugo for Best Director at the Chicago IFF, a Special Jury Award from the Minsk IFF Listapad, the Golden Bengal Tiger Award for Best Film at the Kolkata IFF and the Best Artistic Contribution at the Cairo IFF.
Ash Mayfair is working on her second feature film tentatively titled Skin of Youth about an all-consuming love story between a transgender singer and a dog-cage fighter set in 1990s Saigon, Vietnam.
